As Nigeria celebrates 65 years of independence on October 1, MoMo Payment Service Bank, a subsidiary of MTN Nigeria, is relieving its customers of transfer fees for 24 hours.
From 12:00 am to 11:59 pm, both new and existing customers can send money to friends, family, vendors, or colleagues without paying any fees. The company says the move is about easing financial pressure while marking the spirit of freedom that Independence Day represents.
“Independence Day is about freedom, unity and resilience. For us at MoMo, financial freedom is central to that vision. By offering free transfers nationwide, we are celebrating Nigeria’s 65th anniversary in a way that directly impacts the lives of millions of people,” Rosemary Aimankhu, Chief Commercial Officer, MTN Nigeria, said.
Since July, MoMo users have enjoyed free transfers; however, it was limited to transactions of smaller amounts. For Independence Day, MoMo is extending the offer to all transfers, regardless of amount, giving more Nigerians the chance to benefit from charge-free transfers.
While waiving transfer fees may not seem like a big deal, it is part of a broader pattern of small but practical benefits that MoMo builds into its services. Customers already enjoy 2% cashback on airtime and data purchases, as well as the convenience of buying electricity tokens and paying for cable TV subscriptions with no extra charges. Together, these little savings add up, easing the daily financial pressures faced by individuals and households.

MoMo expects millions of Nigerians to take advantage of these free services as a way of cutting cost and keeping more money in their wallet. Even after Independence, Nigerians can still enjoy Free transfers on MoMo, but for transactions under N10,000 until the end of the year.
