African Development Bank Appoints Dr. Emmanuel Pinto Moreira As Director Of Special Operations

The African Development Bank appoints Dr. Emmanuel Pinto Moreira as Director of Special Operations, effective 1 July 2024, focusing on Africa’s green wealth.

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has appointed Dr. Emmanuel Pinto Moreira as Director of Special Operations in the President’s Cabinet Office, effective 1 July 2024. Dr. Moreira, an economist from Benin, brings over 30 years of expertise in macro-fiscal, economic governance, growth, poverty reduction, trade, and competitiveness across various regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and North Africa.

In his new role, Dr. Moreira will focus on the African Development Bank’s Ten-Year Strategy, specifically on revaluing Africa’s green wealth. He will collaborate with the Economic Governance and Knowledge Management Vice Presidency and other key stakeholders to advance sustainable economic initiatives. His appointment underscores the Bank’s commitment to driving environmental sustainability and socio-economic growth across the continent.

Dr. Moreira has a distinguished career at the AfDB, having held senior positions, including Lead Advisor and Director of the Country Economics Department. His previous roles at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) involved policy dialogue with Maghreb countries and providing economic advice to Francophone African nations. He also managed the Macro-Poverty Outlook for 18 countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Moreira expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I am truly honoured and excited about this new position. I will work closely with colleagues to deliver the green wealth agenda for the benefit of our continent.”

AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina lauded Moreira’s experience, saying, “The Bank will benefit immensely from his policy expertise, research capabilities, and deep understanding of socio-economic challenges facing Africa.”
