A new report from the Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading authority for project professionals, reveals how trailblazers in Generative AI (GenAI) are transforming project management. The study, “First Movers’ Advantage: The Immediate Benefits of Adopting Generative AI for Project Management,” highlights significant performance enhancements and business transformation driven by GenAI.
The report surveyed 500 project professionals globally who are actively using GenAI in their work. Findings indicate that organizations fostering GenAI adoption witness remarkable improvements among project professionals. Trailblazers, or high adopters of GenAI, report increased productivity (93% vs. 58% of low adopters), enhanced problem-solving (89% vs. 46%), and greater effectiveness (88% vs. 50%). These professionals also see boosts in collaboration (83% vs. 32%) and creativity (84% vs. 44%).
Additional benefits for high adopters include improved project scope (87% vs. 34%), scheduling (85% vs. 46%), cost management (85% vs. 42%), and quality management (91% vs. 40%). The surge in GenAI usage, doubling in late 2023 according to Microsoft and LinkedIn, mirrors trends observed by PMI among its nearly one-million-member community.
Pierre Le Manh, President & CEO of PMI, remarked, “GenAI trailblazers maximize adoption to elevate performance and navigate complex work. They stand out for their innovative leadership. We aim to help all project professionals harness GenAI’s exponential growth.”
The report emphasizes that trailblazers excel in prompt engineering, using GenAI for complex tasks like data analysis, planning, and risk management. These high adopters are three times more likely to enhance their skills with GenAI compared to low adopters. Trailblazers also advocate for organizational adoption, significantly aiding the integration of this technology.
“GenAI is transforming every industry, creating opportunities for project professionals to implement this disruptive technology,” said Le Manh. “Trailblazers thrive in organizations that empower GenAI use, seizing the moment to lead the GenAI revolution.”
Developing GenAI Resources for Project Professionals
PMI, leveraging its unique global community of knowledge workers, has embraced GenAI tools like PMI Infinity and offers related training. Project professionals experimenting with GenAI share their insights within the PMI community, further advancing the profession.
PMI is set to launch a series of industry-specific GenAI prompts, enhancing project professionals’ ability to integrate AI into their workflow. The Prompt Library, part of PMI Infinity, will provide vetted prompts, helping users develop precise prompts for day-to-day project work.
By championing GenAI adoption, PMI continues to support project professionals in navigating and leading in an AI-enhanced landscape.
